ORIGINS
Aerogel is an incredibly light material — 99.8% air — earning nicknames like “solid air” and “blue smoke” for its translucent, otherworldly appearance. Weighing only about 1 kg/m³, Aerogel was originally developed by NASA, where it became a vital thermal insulator for the Mars Rovers and a heat shield for Space Shuttles.
To picture its structure, imagine a jelly dessert dried out completely but still holding its shape—this is how Aerogel stays super light while maintaining a solid form. Its exceptional insulation properties even allowed NASA to develop tools like HIAD, an inflatable re-entry shield.
Application in Architecture
