Aerogel-Lime External Wall Insulation:
Breathable Thermal Barrier for Energy Efficiency

External wall insulation is a great way to improve the energy efficiency of old buildings while safeguarding them from the elements. With the right materials, you can protect your property, enhance its appearance, and ensure its long-term health.
The Unique Needs of Solid External Walls
CONSIDERATIONS FOR INSULATING SOLID BRICK OR STONE WALLS
Before selecting an external wall insulation system for your building, it is essential to understand the unique characteristics of solid brick or stone walls:

Wind-Driven Rain and Weather Resistance
Porous brick-and-lime or stone-and-lime masonry can absorb rainwater during wet periods, leading to moisture appearing on the interior surfaces of the walls.Radiating Cold
The breathable nature of the masonry allows it to release any moisture it has absorbed. However, this evaporation process can significantly cool the wall, effectively turning it into an “air conditioner” that you cannot switch off.Breathability
The fabric of old buildings relies on breathability to regulate moisture. Vapour-permeable walls allow water to escape but also tend to enable liquid water to enter, exacerbating moisture issues.- Cement rendering on old masonry prevents rainwater ingress but inhibits breathability, leading to alternative damp problems.
- Traditional lime rendering, while breathable, is not waterproof, meaning the masonry can still become saturated after heavy rain.
4. Heritage Considerations
Preserving the traditional aesthetics and original features of a historic building is often a priority. Achieving this requires a slim-profile lime insulating render that can be shaped and detailed to replicate original architectural elements.
The Aerogel-Lime External Wall Insulation System offers a slim-profile, breathable, and waterproof solution that addresses these challenges while respecting the integrity of historic buildings.
A PROVEN SOLUTION FOR HERITAGE AND MODERN HOMES
How Does the Aerogel-Lime Insulation System Work?
By merging ancient Roman techniques with cutting-edge technology, this system adopts a three-layer approach to address the three most critical issues where other solutions often fall short:
1. Protective Base Coat
Rinzaffo MGN:
- A breathable, salt- and dampness-resistant lime plaster base coat.
- Protects the thermal plaster from salt and dampness related damage.
- Extending the lifespan of the insulating render up to tenfold.
2. Thermal Insulation Plaster
- Termointonaco 2020 MGN: High performance insulating lime plaster perfect for thicker applications (up to 120 mm).
- Termorasante Aerogel MGN: A slim-profile, super-insulating lime plaster incorporating aerogel for exceptional insulation and thermal comfort. Perfect where insulation thickness is limited to under two inches.

3. Weather-Resistant Protective Finish
- Rasante B2007 MGN: Designed for external use, this water-repellent lime render finish provides enhanced weather protection while preserving a traditional appearance.
- Water-Repellent Masonry Paint: The insulating lime render buildup should receive two-three coats of breathable water-repellent silicate masonry paint.
